RL Handcrafts Clydesdale versus HoldFast Moneymaker Review. As I have the MoneyMaker and the Clydesdale duel camera harness I thought this review would make an interesting comparison! Both harnesses give you the opportunity to carry 2 cameras and are made of leather so which is better!
RL Handcrafts Clydesdale versus HoldFast MoneyMaker – Leather
Although my HoldFast Moneymaker is the standard size, the RL Handcraft is slightly slimmer as I went for the ‘light’ version. The light versions are more suited for mirrorless cameras as with my Sony A7r II. HoldFast also makes a slim harness called the ‘skinny’ but apart from that, they are similar for this review.
I like the quality of the leather on both harnesses which is genuine and branded. Matching a camera harness with your attire correctly is simply a matter of pairing up the color, style, and finish. The Clydesdale came in a really nice two-tone tan and coffee colour!
RL Handcrafts Clydesdale versus HoldFast Moneymaker – Design
This is where they really differ! The RL Handcrafts Clydesdale has a patented 6-point pivot design while the MoneyMaker is simpler with 2 leather straps crossing at the back and held with a rivet. The Moneymaker has a belt style which is adjusted at the back with buckles.
The Clydesdale looks different as the straps are adjusted with some neat button studs! I have to admit I do like this much more than buckles.
RL Handcrafts Clydesdale versus HoldFast MoneyMaker – Camera Connectors
As with the BlackRapid both these harnesses connect to the base of your camera using the tripod mount screw. There have been comments from photographers having concerns when using the tripod mount. I have been using straps this way for quite a few years and have never had any problems.
I find the best way is to screw the connectors into an arc-swiss plate by using a little Locktite. This offers a little more peace of mind knowing the screw thread is really secure!
The connectors on the Clydesdale and MoneyMaker are made of steel and extremely well made. I can’t see either of these ever coming loose or disconnecting but once again for that added security they come with an additional safety strap. The Clydesdale safety strap is made with matching leather, unlike the MoneyMaker which appears to be a nylon strap.
RL Handcrafts Clydesdale versus HoldFast MoneyMaker – Conclusion
I like them both and it comes down to which suits you the most! I do like the design of the Clydesdale a little more especially at the back which looks a little more refined. But then, that’s my taste and yours may be different. The HoldFast MoneyMaker Skinny at the moment retails at USD 230 while the RL Handcraft Clydesdale sells at USD 205
These harnesses are a great way to give you are more refined look and a well-dressed person will instantly gain a certain amount of attention! RL Handcrafts and Hold Fast have a fantastic selection of styles and colours to suit every photographer and feel free to browse the (non-affiliated) links to their stores.
