Minolta 50mm f1.4 Rokkor with Sony A7r Review

Minolta MD ROKKOR‑X 50mm f/1.4 Review. This is a solid all metal lens and I managed to pick one up in beautiful condition from eBay for only USD 300. Placing this on my Sony A7R with an adapter makes an awesome combination.

Focusing is easy using the waffle pattern rubber grip which feels very smooth. Being a manual lens, it also has a smooth, grippy aperture ring which is much nicer than the newer, plasticky version. I have never liked plastic anyway, and always loved these older lens even though they’ll be a little heavier. Pick one up and feel the quality, knowing it’s going to last even more years taking a few knocks along the way!

Wide open at f1/4 it is soft, but then, what would you expect with any lens at this aperture. As soon as you step down to f/2. it sharpens up and I find it’s sweet spot at f5.6. and f/8

Bokeh (the out-of-focus blur) is beautiful and creamy as one would expect from a ROKKOR shot wide open.

Colours are rich and saturated although I find this lens to be a little less contrasty in comparison to my Voigtlander 58mm f1/4. However, CA is handled much better. This can be easily edited in post process!

Minolta MD ROKKOR‑X 50mm f/1.4 Conclusion

The Minolta MD ROKKOR‑X 50mm 1.4 will give you an impressive overall performance, and I would highly recommend this for you Sony A7R. It is a manual lens but teamed with Sony A7R’s focusing peaking and a little practice you can easily nail that shot! You don’t need the most expensive adapter, but unfortunately the one I purchased gave ‘light reflection’ which showed at high  ISO when stopped down. To be honest you wouldn’t really want to shoot with this lens on those settings anyway. Open it up and enjoy that Bokeh! Just a heads up! With its low price today, it certainly makes an excellent choice and you won’t be disappointed if you can your hands on one.
